Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam, the topic of my khutba today is Self Examination. This is a modified version of a Friday Khutba delivered at the Holy Mosque in Makkah last year by Imaam ul Haramain Sheikh Usaamah Khayyat.

All praise is due to Allâh. May peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Dear Brothers in Islam, Have Taqwa toward Allah (in other words, fear His punishment and have the desire for His Mercy). And establish righteousness and justice and Ihsan. And prevent and avoid evil and ugliness and sins.

Dear Brothers in Islam! Fear Allah now before its too late. Allah says in numerous ayahs in the Quraan to fear the day of Judgement where only good A’maal will be of use and every thing else will be useless.

And fear the Day when ye shall be brought back to God. Then shall every soul be paid what it earned, and none shall be dealt with unjustly. from Suratul Baqara

Fellow Muslims! Have you seen how a resourceful and clever businessman reflects every now and then about how his or her business moves…about the gains and losses…and the causes for the ups and downs…and looks for ways to improve the business and to avoid decline and downfall? That is how a watchful Muslim should be during the course of his or her life…and his passing of each of its stages. He should wait at the end of every point in his life and look back at whatever he has said and done; call himself to an accurate account and censor himself accordingly when necessary. At the end of each day, we should take a close look at how we spent it. Did we pray on time? Did we go to the masjid or did we pray at home? Did we lie or cheat anyone? Did we help anyone? Did we commit any other sins. How can we improve the next day? Brothers and sisters in Islam, we have to do this to improve ourselves. We have to examine ourselves. Allah doesn’t treat the people who do good deeds and those who don’t equally…nor does He treat sinners and pious people the same.

Another example of a good Muslim is like that of a good student: you know how a good student makes sure that he or she learns the subject matter way before its time for the exams. Why? Because a good student knows that its useless to try and study at the last moment. Similarly, its useless to try and convert into a good Muslim when you’re old and dying. Who knows which of us will see old age and which of us will have less time to build our record books with good deeds. Once we die the book gets closed. If we receive our book in our right hand on the day of judgement, we have succeeded, no matter how badly we failed in our lives in this world. If we receive our book in our left hand on that final day, then we have failed no matter how much of a success we were in this world. This is not a fairy tale, this is the message of Allah in the Quraan:

So whoever is given his book in his right hand - he will say, “Take, read my account!” “I was certain that I will confront my account.” He is therefore in the desired serenity. In a high Garden. The fruit clusters of which are hanging down. “Eat and drink with pleasure – the reward of what you sent ahead, in the past days.” And whoever is given his book in his left hand - he will say, “Alas, if only my account were not given to me!” “And had never come to know my account!” “Alas, if only it had been just death.” “My wealth did not in the least benefit me.” “All my power has vanished.” It will be said, “Seize him, and shackle him.” “Then hurl him into the blazing fire.” “Then bind him inside a chain which is seventy arm-lengths.” “Indeed he refused to accept faith in Allah, the Greatest.” “And did not urge to feed the needy.” “So he does not have any friend here this day.” “Nor any food except the pus discharged from the people of hell.” “Which none except the guilty shall eat.”

The way to ensure that our report books are received in the right hand on yaumul qiyamah, we have to do our utmost to follow Islam the way its supposed to be followed using the Quraan and Hadeeth and Sunnah of our prophet Muhammad S.A.W. If we don’t do our utmost we are taking a huge chance against eternal future and its a great loss.

We spend 25 to 30 years of our best years of a short life trying to secure a financially secure future which will last us another 30 to 40 years (if we’re lucky). We spend a little of our spare time, when we are not busy with things we really like to do, learning about Islam and practicing our Islam…in preparation for an eternal life. My father gives this example when he talks about how much we prepare for this world and how little we prepare for the everlasting life after death: Can you imagine a traveller who starts building a house at a railway station when he’s waiting for his next train…and he starts getting comfortable and starts buying furniture and appliances to be used while he’s at the railway station? No one would be stupid enough to invest time, money and energy in preparing so much for a temporary stay at a railway station. Similarly we should not get so involved in our lives here in this world that we forget to prepare for the life in the hereafter, which will never ever end!

Umar ibn Al-Khattab said,

Call yourselves to account before you are called to it and weigh your deeds before a day when they shall be weighed for you.

Al-Hasan Al-Basrî said,

The true believer is a guardian of his own self and continuously calls his soul to account for the sake of Allâh. The reckoning of the Day of Resurrection will only be difficult for those who live the life of this world without ever examining their conscience and calling themselves to account.

He then explained that the essence of self-examination is when a believer pauses after having performed a deed and notices that he is negligent in a matter and then addresses himself saying,

What do I want by this deed? By Allâh I will not be excused for it. By Allâh I will never do it again, Insha Allâh!

Dear brothers and sisters in Islam! We have to start today. Let’s examine what we are lacking and fix it today. Let’s ask ourselves what we can do to improve our situation. For example, we need to come to the masjid to pray, not just on Fridays, but everyday, as much as possible. If we are at home at Asar time or at Maghrib time, we are obligated to come to the masjid to pray. Let’s all try to do that. Another example: we could try to learn one ayah of the Quraan everyday or one surah every week or every month. We could come to the masjid and sit down and read with someone. We have to act like a clever businessman who plans how to grow his or her business and avoid losses. Let’s all make the intention of doing at least one good thing to improve ourselves inshaAllah.
